THE LEGENDARY JAPANESE PAPER
In 1914, the Tomoegawa Paper Company was founded in Shimizu City, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan.
The company owes its name to the Tomoegawa River, which flows close to the production site. 105 years later, Tomoe River, the paper originally produced for catalog mailings, is one of the most popular papers among modern stationery enthusiasts.
While conventional notebooks generally use paper weighing between 80 and 100 g, Tomoe River defies the norm with a weight of just 52 g. Despite its thinness, this paper is renowned for its exceptional compatibility with fountain pen ink.

THE TUMULTUOUS HISTORY OF TOMOE RIVER PAPER
In Tomoegawa, Japan, machine no. 7 was about to cease production of Tomoe River paper. It would soon be transferred to machine no. 9 in Shizuoka, where the "new" Tomoe River paper would be manufactured until the end of October 2021. The rumblings in the pen world have grown louder and louder. The purchase of large quantities of "new" TR quickly followed the announcement that Tomoegawa would cease production of Tomoe River paper altogether.
Fortunately, Sanzen Paper came to the rescue, purchasing not only the remaining stocks of the "new" Tomoe River paper, but also the rights to Tomoe River. Sanzen is part of Japan's largest paper manufacturing conglomerate, so Tomoe River's future seemed to be in good hands for the long term, and the stationery and pen communities heaved a sigh.
