In contrast to modern consumer products that condition our needs and are replaced once broken or outdated, the Japanese company TRAVELER'S COMPANY - formerly Midori - has created a handmade notebook that gives its owner a sense of freedom through its simplicity and solidity. In addition, this notebook rediscovers the stimulating and creative experience of writing by hand, which has almost disappeared.

THE LEGENDARY NOTEBOOK
Created in 2006, the notebook consists of an interchangeable notebook wrapped in a soft leather cover that improves with time and use. The formal minimalism of the notebook allows its owner to personalise it almost at will according to his needs and tastes thanks to the thirty or so refills available.

Each shop is a journey into the world of TRAVELER'S COMPANY, with every element of decoration designed and handcrafted by the brand's producer Iijima Atsuhiko and art director Miho Hashimoto.
TRAVELER'S FACTORY is not a shop like the others.
For example, you will find items related to train travel in the shop at the famous Tokyo station, decoration related to aeroplanes in the shop at Narita airport or items related to traditional Japan in the shop in Kyoto.
If you are a real fan of the brand, you can't go to Japan without visiting the official Nakameguro shop. You will of course find the entire TRAVELER'S COMPANY collection but also a great selection of products such as the TOYO STEEL Japanese steel boxes, the TOOLS TO LIVEBY Japanese steel scissors or the PICUS brass accessories.

How did the TRAVELER'S COMPANY adventure start?
We launched TRAVELER'S notebook in 2006 under the MIDORI brand after winning second prize in a design competition. We presented an A5 notebook in rawhide. At that time, this kind of design did not exist. That's what motivated us to develop this product.
The cover is handmade in a small factory in Chiang Mai, Thailand. Leather is a noble material but it is difficult to use if it is not treated. It was important to think of a harmony between the use and the characteristic of the material. That's why we combined it with a Japanese white paper notebook.
Later on, we came up with the idea of integrating different paper models. Today we have several that we can choose from as needed. Then we created a pencil holder that fits into the notebook.
It was important to create a simple product so that it could be easily customised and reflect people's personalities. That's what's important. The more customisable it is, the more people appreciate it and it becomes valuable. One day, while travelling, I accidentally left a trace of coffee on my notebook. When I got back to Japan and saw the trace again, memories of that moment came back to me.

Writing by hand is different from writing with a keyboard. To simply record information, I find it sufficient to use digital products, but to express feelings, memories - we prefer to write by hand.
We love collaborations, and every time we do, it's an enriching experience for us. Sometimes people contact us, other times we contact them. For a restaurant in Hawaii, we developed a notebook design using their menu. We also collaborated with Hong Kong's Star Ferry. The notebooks resulting from this collaboration are sold with a usable ferry ticket. For customers, it's a new experience. For our collaboration with Ace Hotels, we organized an event during which people could make their own SPIRAL RING NOTEBOOK by combining different types of paper. At the end, a craftsman bound them by hand with a metal spiral binding.
Are you influenced by Japanese culture?
We're Japanese, so even without thinking, it comes naturally. For example, our packaging comes from the traditional Japanese way of wrapping money in a paper cloth during important ceremonies.
